Current Situation

We are living through a period of time that will probably never happen again. There is little or nothing we can do at global or national level to change anything. However at a local level we can, if we want to. Currently the situation is as follows

  1. We have not been forced to shut by the Government
  2. We remain open with a skeleton staff
  3. We maintain the highest standards of cleaning and hygiene
  4. Most Customers are taking the governments advice to stay  away from pubs and restaurants
  5. We have many customers who live on their own and I fear for them being cut off and lonely.
  6. Many venues in the city have closed down, and many plan to shut in the coming days.
  7. The government have announced packages to help business come through this economically
  8. It is still unclear how government funding will work or be administered.

Keeping our doors open is no longer about profit and loss; it’s now about the following

  1. Serving the local community
  2. Being here to support our NHS customers
  3. Securing jobs for the future
  4. Working together and supporting each other
  5. Helping our customers whenever and however we can

Until I can find out how government financial assistance will work, I am going to have to cut hours back as we simply don’t have enough customers to support the wage bill. However there are some options I would like you all to consider, and I would be delighted to hear of any options you can think of.

  1. We can work on a voluntary basis temporarily and pay wages later
  2. Food and drinks can be free and sorted out at a later date
  3. I can purchase food and provisions for staff from cash and carry at cost price
  4. We can ask our regulars to muck in and help out

To summarise, the situation we are all in is unprecedented, so the rule books are for me irrelevant so we can be one of the following types

  1. Look after number one and to hell with everyone else, buy 20 packs of toilet roll that they don’t need
  2. Look after all around us buy enough toilet roll  to suffice
  3. Look after all around us and buy one extra toilet roll and give it to someone who really needs it

Mother Teresa's Anyway Poem

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered;
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you've got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your God;
It was never between you and them anyway.
